#13 - Best New Hip-Hop / Rap Songs of September 18th (feat. Lil Tecca, Pop Smoke, Tyga)

Virgo World - Album by Lil Tecca

Lil Tecca hit the scene with his breakout single “Ransom”, and he’s gained a loyal fanbase that were waiting for more of the same energy that he brought on that track.

Unfortunately, it seems like that was a one time deal, as he hasn’t been the same since. He’s still considered a talented artist with tons of potential, but he seems to be taking steps backwards with his new music.

His recent tracks point me to believe that he’s taken a more mellow approach to his music… which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but Tecca unfortunately has built this grand persona where he can bring this energy and flow, and he isn’t living up to the expectations.

This new album does bring some decent stuff onto the table though, with songs like :

Dolly (feat. Lil Uzi Vert)

Tic Toc

Out Of Love (feat. Internet Money)

Selection / (Skrillex & DJ Scheme)

That being said, I’m gonna give this a 7.6/10.

Mood Swings (Remix) [feat. Lil Tjay & Summer Walker) - Single by Pop Smoke

I hate to say it… but getting rid of the Lil Tjay background vocals might have been the worst musical decision I’ve ever seen/heard. While they are there in the middle of the song, the beginning of the song is noticeably raw. I think Summer Walker did a decent job with her verse, and I really appreciated the layering of the voices during the chorus.

Very underwhelming, you might as well stick with the original. 7.4/10.

Said Sum (Remix) [City Girls & DaBaby] - Single by Moneybagg Yo

To be completely honest, I haven’t heard the original version of this song, but I’m pretty impressed with this version nonetheless. Not much to say about it, other than that I really like Moneybagg Yo’s part. I do think Moneybagg is a very underrated artist who deserves more credit.

Decent tune coming in with a 7.7/10.

Money Mouf (feat. Saweetie & YG) - Single by Tyga

Tyga found his niche when he re-entered the game with “Taste”, but unfortunately it’s becoming very repetitive. With Tyga, you know exactly what you're getting before you get it. You’re getting pump-up / party music, which isn’t terrible, but it does get stale at a certain point. Saweetie surprisingly delivers the best verse on the track, while YG is almost unnoticeable. The song does have a catchy hook, but the beat is a little annoying.

I’ll give it a 7.4/10.

ChopBloc, pt. 3 (feat. NLE Choppa) - Single by BlocBoy JB

My favourite track from this week.

A dark toned track with solid performances from both artists. NLE Choppa does what he does, but instead he chooses to ride the beat instead of going in his own direction, which I really appreciate. BlocBoy JB makes his first appearance in my radar in a LONG time, and I’m contently surprised.

I’ll give this a 7.8/10.
